Gupta Power: Augmenting the Cable Business

Abhishek Gupta
Mr. Abhishek Gupta – Director Gupta Power Infrastructure Ltd.
Gupta Power Infrastructure Ltd (GPIL), a 50 years old company with three manufacturing plants located at Khurda and Kashipur that makes both cables and conductors whereas the Chennai plant is dedicated towards manufacturing of conductors only. GPIL did a business of about USD 225 million at the end of March 2011. Being in business for 50 years is a testimony to the services they have rendered to our customer which has helped us to keep them in our fold. Here we present the excerpts of the interaction with Mr. Abhishek Gupta, Director, GPIL.

Wire & Cable India: What are your plans for ELECRAMA 2012? What will be the theme of your partici-pation besides what products will be at display during the show including new launches, if any?

Abhishek Gupta: ELECRAMA is a carnival which is being participated & visited by both domestic & international manufacturers & users to witness the display of electrical equipment including cables. It is a platform for all manufacturers to demonstrate their capacity & capability of manufacturing. We shall be displaying all product ranges manufactured by us. Recently, we initiated the manufacturing of 66 kV cables for which the necessary equipment from TROESTER, Germany has already arrived. We shall also be showing activities of our EPC division which recently has bagged an order from a major power producer towards design, engineering, supply, erection, testing & commissioning for construction/augmentation of power distribution network.

WCI: What are your future plans for wire & cables segment?

AG: We have decided to go for expansion in copper cable manufacturing in a big way & have already ordered very sophisticated machinery required for this project from leading overseas manufacturer. We hope to be ready with our facility within next 3 to 4 months from now at Khurdha.

WCI: The wire & cable industry is going through a period of over capacity. How do you look forward to this scenario over next couple of years?

AG: Cable industry is going through a lean phase because of various reasons. The gap between supply & demand of power is very high in our country as such cable industry should look for good days ahead, but at the same time the users should understand the technology & quality of the products & not only go for the prices while deciding the purchases. If T&D loses are to be reduced & grids are to be made smarter the only way it can be done is by going for quality oriented products of equipment. It’s very unfortunate that cable manufacturing in our country has been taken as a commodity whereas there is a lot of technology involved in manufacturing right quality product which users need to understand & adopt.

WCI: What are the other major developments at GPIL?

AG: As already said we have gone for 66 KV cable manufacturing & besides this we have implemented SAP, Cable Builder & Sales Force technology which should help us to improve on our working & serve customers better. The SAP system has particularly is very helpful in production planning which has enhanced our efficiency in production & timely supply to our customers. We are also opening export front and are working towards setting up export goals for ourselves.

WCI: What are your expectations from ELECRAMA 2012?

AG: We expect during Elecrama – 2012 many national & international users to visit & we should be in a position to spread our brand image & technology superiorities among them.
