ASSOMAC: Indigenous Excellence With Breakthrough Technology

“Modern machines and technology is giving newer dimensions to the engineering sector. Assomac, which is now leading the fray in wire drawing machines, is no exception. Even since its inception the company has been on the path of success achieving technological breakthrough and setting new standards for the industry,” says Mr. R.K. Tyagi, Founder & Chairman, Assomac Machines Ltd.

AssomacAssomac is among few companies which have helped the Indian wire industry reach a global quality benchmark through its technologies in the last three decades. The maker of machines such as wire drawing machine, wire cutting machinery, wire making machinery, etc., is today an integrated conglomerate of engineering companies in manufacturing all types equipment and the accessories used in making alloy steel, carbon steel, mild steel, stainless steel and other non-ferrous wires.

Drawing on the experiences of witnessing and understanding the foreign technologies, the company in its initial year resolved to produce machines and equipments of equal excellence indigenously. Gradually, adopting the international best practices and indigenous engineering acumen, it started furnishing machines and tools to the Indian wire and cable industry resulting in quality produce at economical price. The company even today is known for these economical yet globally matched technologies.

Wire & Cable India recently hosted an interaction with Mr. R. K. Tyagi, Founder & Chairman, Assomac Machines Ltd. Excerpts:

Wire and Cable India: Share with us your experiences of three decades of machine making.

R. K. Tyagi: Assomac started with a humble beginning. No matter what approach you take while running a company, but if you look back nothing can beat experience, which counts the most. The developments and innovations that we are looking at right now are a result of the late 90s when the economy opened up to the foreign market. The information or technological innovations which are taking place in the world are available with the click of the mouse.

Earlier, even the Government style of functioning was a bit slow; you had to wait for months and months for getting any type of clearances from the department. We have come a long way in the last two decades, but we are always flexible on technology adoption. The companies who adopted for the new approach were very few in that era but now the numbers are increasing. Assomac built up its name with course of time and due to great confidence, our customers are with us.

WCI: As a leading supplier of wire cutting, wire drawing and wire making machinery for India and overseas, please tell us about the most pressing challenges faced by the wire and cable industry in the areas of drawing, cutting, and making wires. How does your process technology come to aid in addressing those challenges? (Elaboration with examples would be more appropriate).

RKT: Engineering has indeed changed the world we live in today. Wire is important especially in the engineering sector. Modern machines and technology is giving newer dimensions to the engineering sector. Assomac, which is now leading the fray in wire drawing machines, is no exception. Even since its inception the company has been on the path of success achieving technological breakthrough and setting new standards for the industry. The first breakthrough in technological up-gradation was for manufacturing machines for making stainless steel wire. We had our own challenges for serving to this segment of industry where skilled manpower was not available even the excess to this technology was not available. We identified this segment which had a huge potential and could give good returns to our customers.

Within a short span, many projects for manufacturing S.S wires in India emerged and most of them are our valuable customers. Today India has a name in manufacturing stainless steel wire and huge quantity of stainless steel wire is being exported to developed nations like Europe and Unites States. We also made an impact in manufacturing of MIG Wire Plants in the country. In this competitive world, productivity and efficiency improvement are the drivers for cost competitiveness. Many companies in the engineering sector have doubled their productivity in the last 10 – 15 years, the trend will continue in the near future too. We proudly claim that 80-90 percent MIG Wire being produced in the country is drawn in our plant and machinery; it is indeed a sustainable journey for us. We have added other high speed machines for production of wires and these machines are at par with standards of any European machines.

WCI: As a machine maker, none can understand the utility of latest technology better than you. Please give us your views about the adoption of latest technology by elaborating your own technological adherence at your manufacturing facilities.

RKT: India is now, one of the global manufacturing hubs due to large Indian customer base, focusing on quality and delivering high quality machines at a competitive price. Our machines as mentioned earlier are at par with European standards. We are regularly exporting the machines and are getting orders from developed countries also.

WCI: Quality is crucial for wires and cables as carriers of electricity and data today. What are your quality commitments while making machines and how do these reflect in the quality of eventual products i.e. wires and cable?

RKT: We at Assomac are committed to meet and exceed customer’s requirements of quality and delivery at agreed cost. We are continuously improving our quality management system with the involvement of all employees. Thus, we are gaining excellence in manufacturing technology. The ISO 9001: 2008 certified conglomerate is a trusted name now in the domestic and international market, dominant for over 46 years now. Assomac Machines Ltd. has been honored with the EEPC awards for the last 12 consecutive years, which speak volumes about our prominence in the market. All the machines we manufacture are at par with European and American, standards. We are known worldwide for the superlative quality of our products. The 40 percent of our revenue, on an average, is generated from exports.

WCI: Please give us your comments on the present state of the wire and cable industry. Do you see any major capital investments by the industry towards expansion and machinery?

RKT: With our country striving for ‘Make in India’, India is going to be global manufacturing hub. The Government is focused on skilled development to ensure availability of skilled manpower. The development in infrastructure to improve supply chain, the adoption of international standard technologies, and competitiveness which is there in the country, makes us feel that there is soon going to be huge capital investment in the wire industry too.
