Alstom T&D India successfully delivers Power Grid’s 230 kV transmission project in Myanmar

May 29, 2013

Alstom T&D India has concluded the successful delivery of Power Grid Corporation of India Limited’s (PGCIL) 230 kV transmission project, worth around Rs. 105 crore, in Myanmar. The contract covered the supply of a turnkey substation for the 230 kV transmission project which links the 3×40 MW Thahtay Chaung Hydro Power Project to the electrical grid and of which, several critical Power Transformers have already been delivered in a record three months time. Already a market leader in transmission in India, this project marks Alstom’s first steps into neighbouring countries such as Myanmar.

As part of the turnkey project, Alstom T&D India was responsible for the design, engineering, supply, and commissioning of the substation. The full scope covered a 220/66/33kV AIS substation and associated products including substation automation systems, power transformers and network management systems and high voltage substation maintenance. The project is scheduled for commissioning in 2015.

Commenting on the contract, Mr. Rathin Basu, Managing Director, Alstom T&D India said: “Alstom is pleased to support Powergrid’s initiatives in transforming the energy landscape not only in India but also in neighbouring countries like Myanmar. This project further showcases our technological leadership in the transmission space and reaffirms the confidence that our customers have in our ability to deliver world class products and solutions in a variety of regions and geographies.”

In Myanmar, just 25 percent of the population has access to the national grid, offering significant opportunities for development in the fields of power generation, transmission and distribution. Alstom T&D has already built the load dispatching systems in Bangladesh and Bhutan, as well as several regional dispatching systems in India. This project will be a step forward for Alstom in the construction of Myanmar’s electric grid transmission network.
