Sir Michael Nairn, Chairman, Rautomead, presented a paper at the ICDC seminar “Technical Advances in Copper CC Rod Manufacture & Down-stream Processing” at the Hilton Hotel, Mumbai on Sunday 30 November. The seminar was timed to coincide with the 25th year of commercial scale production of copper CCR rod in India.

Sir Michael talked about “Rautomead Technology for Continuous Casting of Oxygen Free Copper, Copper Magnesium & Other Copper Conductor Alloys”. The speech reflected on the development and evolution of Rautomead continuous casting technology during its 35 year history. The Advancing Metals Technology R&D division, (AMT), with both horizontal and upward vertical continuous casting machines and metallurgical laboratory facilities installed at Rautomead Head Office in Dundee U.K., has provided the capability to develop the technology, tooling and controls systems and to apply it to the manufacture and production of new alloys and shapes.

The technology and techniques for the continuous casting of copper magnesium rod were originally developed at the AMT division of Rautomead. Rautomead RS graphite furnace technology is now used by the leading manufacturers and suppliers of Cu-Mg contact and catenary wires in Europe and China including: NKT Cables, Lamifil, La FargaLacambra, NKT Changzhou and CRCEB.
