Nevatia Steel & Alloys: Envisioning Fast-Track Growth in the Steel Wire Industry

Nevatia Steel & Alloys Pvt. Ltd. was incorporated in 1988 to manufacture stainless steel wires for the international market. The wires, manufactured in compliance with International Standards of Quality, are used diversely in automotive, agriculture, marine, petrochemical, and paper industries. Wire & Cable India interviewed Mr. Nikhil Nevatia, Director, Nevatia Steel & Alloys Pvt. Ltd., wherein he shares an overview of the company, the product portfolio, details about their manufacturing setup, their market presence, and his outlook on the Indian steel wire industry.

Wire & Cable India: Kindly give us a glimpse into the business journey of Nevatia Steel & Alloys Pvt. Ltd. Also, describe the significant accomplishments of the company.

Nikhil Nevatia: Nevatia Steel started its operations more than thirty years ago and has a strong presence in Europe and the United States. The stainless steel wires produced at our plants in Tarapur are exported to more than forty countries across the globe.

Nevatia Steel is one of the oldest stainless steel wire manufacturing companies in the country and it is the first company to obtain the quadruple certifications of – IATF 16949, ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001.

WCI: Could you please enlighten us about the product portfolio of the Company? Further, how would you describe the key strengths of these products?

NN: Nevatia steel wires are produced in a variety of grades with a wide size ranging from 0.08 mm to 12.00 mm diameter, and used in various fields having demanding applications such as braiding, knitting, weaving, cold heading, machining, making springs, screens, filters, electro-polish, spokes, and welding.

Nevinox® brand MIG (GMAW) and TIG (GTAW) stainless steel filler welding wires are accredited with Deutsche Bahn (DB)-approval in addition to prestigious approvals from Bureau Veritas for marine applications, TUV for pressure vessels and equipment, as well as the CE-mark.

The MIG wires are also being supplied in drum-packs for robotic and automotive applications.

WCI: Please shed some light on the company with respect to the infrastructural set-up, and manufacturing capabilities. Has there been any capacity expansion or technology upgradation at your facility in the recent past?

NN: Our manufacturing facilities, equipped with comprehensive and modern technologies, have a manufacturing capacity of 12,000 MTPA and are strategically located at Tarapur, which is close to the port of Mumbai. The state-of-the-art wire drawing equipment and annealing lines are procured from well-known and established manufacturers from countries like Germany, Italy, South Korea, and China.

Nevatia Steel has invested in solar systems for electricity generation and uses natural gas as a fuel for furnaces in a bid to take care of the environment. Very soon, we aim to be a ZLD (zero liquid discharge) company.

WCI: Could you please define the market presence of Nevatia Steel & Alloys – both domestically and internationally? What is your outlook on expanding the market reach of the Company?

NN: Over the years, our products have been exported to a large part of the international community. Major destination countries include – Australia, Argentina, Brazil, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Russia, South Africa, Spain, Turkey, UK, and the United States among others. In fact, the exports constitute about 85 percent of our business and the Indian market occupies 15 percent.

WCI: Please share your views on the Indian steel wire industry and describe the major trends which are catalyzing the growth of the industry. How do you think the Indian steel wire industry is positioned in the global marketplace to cater to meet the ever-growing demands of this dynamic industry?

NN: Indian stainless steel wire segment is a bright spark in the engineering sector in India. Thanks to exports, the industry has witnessed a double-digit growth rate for the last several years. With the recent policy level developments in China, Indian stainless steel long product segment is poised for accelerated growth in the coming years.

WCI: Would you touch upon the Company’s performance and growth registered in recent years? Also, what will be your expectations regarding growth in the coming future?

NN: Nevatia Steel has been growing consistently in line with the markets. We expect the FY 2021-22 to be amongst the greatest years in the history in terms of growth of this sector which is projected to register an upward growth of 20 percent over the last year.
