Peel Ports Clydeport, the owner of Hunterston Port and Resource Campus, has come together with XLCC for two factories in Ayrshire, Scotland, which will manufacture HVDC subsea cables. They have signed an agreement that will include the construction of a 70-acre facility consisting of the two cable factories, R&D laboratories, offices, stores, electrical infrastructure, in addition to a high-tech cable delivery system.
Mainly, the production is going to be focused on cables for interconnections and export cables for the offshore wind market. The development requires investment in the order of around USD 511.9 million (370 million Pound Sterling) for buildings and plants and around USD 277.3 million (200 million Pound Sterling) for a commissioned specialist vessel for transporting cable reels, which would be shared with a third XLCC factory.

The planning process has been already initiated by XLCC with North Ayrshire Council and the planning application is projected to go before the committee in February next year. Upon receiving the approval, the work is slated to begin in April.

The test lengths of cable are expected to be made by April 2023, and the full manufacturing production is projected to be completed by November 2024. At present, XLCC is in talks with three offshore energy companies pertaining to the supply of cables that would be produced at Hunterston, with delivery from 2025.
