Prysmian Group to Build Two New Submarine Power Interconnections

Prysmian will supply a submarine power interconnection for the islands of Tenerife and La Gomera, and another submarine power interconnection for the Spanish mainland and Ceuta (a Spanish city on the north coast of Africa). The commissioning of both cable systems is scheduled for 2025.

Prysmian Group has won two new orders of about EUR 250 million (~USD 254 million) by Red Eléctrica de España, S.A.U. Red Eléctrica, the Transmission System Operator of the Spanish power grid, has selected Prysmian for the development of two projects – a submarine power interconnection between the islands of Tenerife and La Gomera, and another submarine power interconnection between the Spanish mainland and Ceuta (a Spanish city on the north coast of Africa).

Prysmian will provide its turnkey approach for designing, supplying, installing, and commissioning the 66 kV HVAC double circuit, three-core submarine power cable with EPR insulation and synthetic-wire armouring. The interconnection will connect Tenerife and La Gomera for a 66 kV three-core cable and additionally a 132 kV HVAC double circuit, three-core submarine power cable with XLPE insulation and synthetic-wire armouring, to connect the Spanish mainland and Ceuta through the Strait of Gibraltar m. Both systems comprise 90 km of submarine route and approximately 11 km of the land route for the double link between the Spanish mainland and Ceuta.

The submarine cables will be manufactured in the Norderham Plant in Germany and the Pikkala Plant in Finland. Both the plants are regarded as the Group’s centres of technological and manufacturing excellence for submarine cables. The land cables will be produced in the plant in Vilanova in Spain. The commissioning of both cable systems is scheduled for 2025.
