Investments of about INR 50,000-60,000 crore have been infused for developing the 5G network infrastructure.

The high-speed 5G services, which will be available in most parts of the country in two-three years, are expected to be affordable, says Minister for Railways, Communications, Electronics & IT Ashwini Vaishnaw. As published in news reports – at the launch of the 5G right of way (RoW) application portal, the union minister said that mobile services in India are one of the most affordable in the world and the trend is likely to be the same for 5G services as well. The application portal will pave the way for a swift and expeditious development of the telecom infrastructure.

“We expect investment of around INR 2.5-3 lakh crore to come into the industry. INR 3 lakh crore is a big investment. This is also leading to good employment generation. Our estimate is 5G will reach almost all parts of the country in the next 2-3 years,” the IT & Telecom Minister said.

He also maintained that the telecom firms are involved in the works related to the laying of the required infrastructure and 5G services are expected to be launched by October. The infrastructure will then be scaled up at a fast pace.

Notably, in view of the Indian Telegraph Right of Way (Amendment) Rules, 2022, telecom companies will not need any approval from authorities for laying cables or installing mobile towers or poles over private properties. The union minister asserted that investments of around INR 50,000-60,000 crore have been infused. Out of the INR 3 lakh crore, most of the investments will be made in the next 18-24 months.

It is quite significant to keep in consideration that the telecom industry has to give equal importance to both rural areas and urban areas – so as to further bridge the urban-rural divide.
