India has notified the WTO of its intention to impose retaliatory tariffs on select U.S. products in response to American safeguard duties on steel and aluminium imports affecting approximately USD 7.6 billion of Indian exports. The proposed tariffs are designed to impose an equivalent duty of around USD 3.82 billion on U.S. goods, as India exercises its rights under WTO safeguard provisions.

India stated on Wednesday that the notification relates to the US’s extended safeguard duties on imports of aluminium, steel, and related products. This move is particularly significant as India and the US are currently working toward a trade agreement, with the first phase expected to be finalized by September or October.
