JSW Steel, in collaboration with Japan’s JFE Steel, is advancing plans to manufacture Grain Oriented Electrical Steel (GOES), a critical material used in power distribution, transformers, and large electric motors.

To support this strategic initiative, JSW Steel has earmarked a capital expenditure of INR 5,845 crore for expanding its production capacity at the Vijaynagar and Nashik plants. This investment, being undertaken jointly with JFE Steel, reflects the rising domestic demand and India’s intent to reduce dependency on GOES imports.
Currently, India’s annual GOES requirement is around 400,000 tonnes, but domestic production remains significantly low, reaching only about 50,000 tonnes in FY24. Recognising this gap, JSW Steel is positioning itself to become a major domestic supplier of GOES.
Commenting on the development, Jayant Acharya, Joint Managing Director and CEO of JSW Steel, said, “The ongoing push towards green energy, decarbonization, and the expansion of digital infrastructure is driving strong demand for high-quality electrical steel in India.”

In line with this, JSW has revised its production targets. At its Vijaynagar facility, the company has increased the planned annual production capacity from 62,000 tonnes to 100,000 tonnes. Likewise, the Nashik plant’s capacity goal has been ramped up five-fold—from 50,000 tonnes to 250,000 tonnes per year.
Both plants are part of the joint venture with JFE Steel and are expected to become operational in FY 2028.
