Medusa Subsea Cable System Landed in Libya

Medusa Submarine Cable System is an 8,700 kilometers submarine fibre optic system connecting the Mediterranean Sea, the Atlantic and the Red Sea.

The Libyan Post, Telecommunications and Information Technology Company (LPTIC) has announced the launch of the ‘Medusa’ submarine cable project. LUIC joined the Medusa project in 2023, and undertook the cable’s full landing in Libya that is anticipated to be completed by the end of 2025.

Medusa Submarine Cable System is an 8,700 kilometers submarine fibre optic system connecting the Mediterranean Sea, the Atlantic and the Red Sea. The system consists of 24 fibre pairs, designed with 20Tbs per fibre pair for a total system capacity of 480Tbps, deployed with  protection and predictive maintenance of submarine cable infrastructures (PSI) and an intelligent monitoring system based on DAS (Distributed Acoustic Sensing) technology.

This project aims to enhance internet speed and quality in Tripoli, Misrata, and Benghazi, as well as support 5G applications, data centers, and cloud computing in the country. It will also strengthen its data governance and public service institutions, contributing significantly to Libya’s digital transformation.

The launching ceremony of this project was attended by many significant people including  Head of the General Authority for LPTIC Abdelbaset Al-Baaour; Chairman of the Board of LPTIC, Youssef Abu Zuwaita; Mayor of Misrata, Mahmoud Al-Saqoutari; and officials from telecommunications companies.
