Electric Submersible Pump (ESP) systems are one of the most common solutions used in the oil and gas industry to lift hydrocarbons when natural reservoir pressure is no longer enough. Within each ESP line, the power cable is a key component: it acts as the electrical lifeline connecting the surface equipment to the downhole motor. Because these systems often operate at great depths and in tough environments, cables must be built to handle high temperatures, mechanical stress, and exposure to aggressive fluids. A typical ESP cable contains three copper conductors, arranged either twisted together or laid in parallel. Each conductor is individually insulated with materials chosen for their ability to withstand temperatures up to 200°C, high pressure, and chemically harsh conditions. Common insulation materials include EPDM (Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer), Polypropylene (PP), and various fluoropolymers. It is within this challenging context that Mixer S.p.A. introduces EKOPREN® 3IS131 and EKOPREN® 3IS151. These two high-performance EPDM-based compounds have been specifically developed to meet the demanding requirements of ESP cable insulation. Suitable for operating voltages up to 25 kV, they combine electrical reliability with excellent material stability, making them a strong choice for modern artificial lift systems.

Both materials are designed to deliver outstanding thermal endurance. They retain their mechanical and electrical properties at temperatures reaching 200°C, conditions typically found in deep wells, high temperature geothermal applications, and other extreme settings. Thanks to this thermal resilience, the insulation layer remains stable over time, reducing the risk of early aging or degradation.

In addition, EKOPREN® 3IS131 and EKOPREN® 3IS151 ensure highly consistent electrical insulation throughout long operating cycles. Their carefully balanced polymer design provides excellent dielectric strength and high electrical resistivity. This contributes to safer, more reliable ESP operation and helps minimize the likelihood of electrical failures.

Overall, these two EKOPREN® compounds reflect Mixer’s dedication to developing reliable, high-quality materials tailored to the specific challenges of the oil and gas industry. Fully compliant with IEEE 1018, they support long-term safety, durability, and efficiency for ESP cable manufacturers and operators around the world.
