Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (POWERGRID) has acquired 100% of Barmer HVDC Power Transmission Limited to develop a 6,000 MW interstate transmission system for evacuating renewable power from Rajasthan for INR 18.98 crore.

Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (POWERGRID) has acquired 100% of Barmer HVDC Power Transmission Limited, the project SPV for establishing the Inter-State Transmission System (ISTS) for evacuation of power from Rajasthan REZ Phase-IV (Part-5: 6 GW) [Barmer Complex] Barmer-II: 6 GW (Solar) (LCC Configuration), under the tariff-based competitive bidding (TBCB) route. Barmer HVDC Power Transmission Limited was acquired for an aggregate value of about Rs. 18.98 Crore including 50,000 equity shares at par at INR 10/- each along with assets and liabilities of Barmer HVDC Power Transmission Limited as on Sept 23, 2026.

The project is being developed on a build, own, operate and transfer (BOOT) basis and involves establishing 6,000 MW, ±800 kV HVDC terminals at Barmer-II in Rajasthan and South Kalamb in Maharashtra, including augmentation of the South Kalamb substation. It also includes a roughly 1,000-km ±800 kV HVDC bipole transmission line between Barmer-II and South Kalamb, traversing Rajasthan, Gujarat and Maharashtra.

The scope further covers the construction of 400 kV transmission lines in Rajasthan along with associated bays, as well as installation of two SynCon units at Barmer-II Power Station and their associated bays. The commercial operations are yet to commence.
