ABB has received a contract from Statoil to install two high-voltage cables to enable power transmission from shore to the Johan Sverdrup field located off the coast of Stavanger in the Norwegian North Sea. Under the USD 90m contract, ABB will be responsible for engineering, procurement, fabrication, installation and testing of two high-voltage power cables and a fibre-optic communication cable for the project.

The 200km high-voltage cables will have supply capacity of 100MW/80kV and will be a part of the first phase of the Johan Sverdrup field development. The company will install the high-voltage cables from Haugsneset in Tysvær municipality north of Stavanger to the Johan Sverdrup field centre on the Utsira High.

Work under the contract will be carried out at ABB’s plant in Karlskrona. The contract also has provision for the supply of high-voltage cables for the Edvard Grieg, Ivar Aasen and Gina Krog fields on the Utsira High.

ABB Power Systems division president Claudio Facchin said: “Delivering enhanced customer value through close customer collaboration is an important element of ABB’s Next Level strategy and we are delighted to be supporting Statoil with this cable system as well as the HVDC converter stations.”

Said to be one of the largest offshore oil fields on the Norwegian Continental Shelf (NCS), the Johan Sverdrup field is estimated to have 550,000 – 650,000 barrels of oil per day of production capacity.

Planned to be commissioned in 2019, the phase one of the Johan Sverdrup project includes installation, of an accommodation, a riser and process platform, and three seabed templates for water injection.

Statoil operates the Johan Sverdrup field with 40.02% stake, while other partners Lundin Norway, Maersk Oil, Petoro and Det norske oljeselskap have 22.6%, 8.44%, 17.36% and 11.57%, respectively.
