Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone of the Tata-Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp unit worth INR 91,000 crore at Dholera, the first semicon city of India in making, which also got the distinction of housing the country’s first commercial semiconductor fabrication facility.

The Prime Minister further inaugurated the CG Power-Renesas outsourced assembly and test (OSAT) facility at Sanand in Gujarat worth INR 7,600 crore and the Tata OSAT unit at Morigaon in Assam worth INR 27,000 crore. All three units, which are worth over INR 1.25 lakh crore, were inaugurated virtually.

The Dholera unit will have a capacity of 50,000 wafer starts per month (WSPM). The CG power semiconductor unit will manufacture chips for consumer, industrial, automotive and power applications, while the Morigaon facility will cater to sectors such as automotive, electric vehicles, consumer electronics, telecom, and mobile phones.

In his virtual address on the occasion, the Prime Minister said that India will soon start commercial production of semiconductors and related products, and was set to become a prominent semiconductor manufacturing hub, a global power in this sector, similar to the technology, nuclear, and digital spaces.

Semiconductor manufacturing will fuel and support India’s technological advancement journey. In the global economy This industry will help generate billions of dollars’ worth of revenues and even employment, he added.

He said the 21st century is technology driven and cannot be imagined without electronic chips. The ‘Made In India Chip’ and ‘Designed In India Chip’ will take the country towards self-reliance and modernity, he added, noting that the three new semiconductor plants will drive economic growth and foster innovation.

The three projects mark India’s entry into the domain of commercial chip fabrication units. India’s semiconductor industry is still in its early stages. But India’s potential in the realm is being seen as vast, which a large number of domestic and global companies are seeking to tap.

As per the government, these facilities will go a long way in boosting the semiconductor ecosystem in the country, besides generating thousands of jobs in the semiconductor industry, apart from catalyzing employment generation in related sectors like electronics and telecom.

According to some estimates, these three units are expected to create direct employment of 20,000 advanced technology jobs and about 60,000 indirect jobs.

Mr Modi said that ‘Made in India’ and ‘Design in India’ chips will help India achieve new milestones. Due to various reasons, India was left behind during the first and the second industrial revolutions. However, India was pioneering Industry 4.0 with confidence, he added.
