Netherlands-based wire products supplier Van Merksteijn International (VMI) has announced its plans to build a new Greenfield steel wire rod plant in the country by 2024.

Previously, VMI had attempted to start the construction of a new integrated wire rod mill in 2019, but the manufacturer had to put those plans on hold due to economic uncertainty as well as problems in obtaining the necessary permits with regard to nitrogen emissions.

Now, after obtaining the required environmental approval from authorities, the Netherlands-based wire producer has resumed its plans to build the wire rod plant in Eemshaven, the Netherlands. The estimated investment for the plant is EUR 300 million.

The construction of the 580,000-tonne wire rod plant will commence in the fourth quarter of the year, and the production is scheduled to begin in 2024. With this plant, VMI is planning to serve the domestic market as a top priority, and then decide whether to increase production, with production doubled at most.
