Nexans wins Subsea Power Cable job with Terna in Italy

Nexans SA has won a frame contract worth over USD 733.9 million (EUR 650 million) to supply a high-voltage, direct current (HVDC) subsea interconnector cable for grid operator Terna SpA as part of the latter’s Tyrrhenian Link project in Italy, as per the press release.

According to the supply contract, the French offshore cable company will manufacture, supply, and install 500 km of a 500-kV mass-impregnated (MI) cable and fibre optic cable at a water depth spanning over 2,000 m between Sardinia and Sicily. The subsea cable project will help grow electricity exchange capacity and support the development of renewable energy flows.

For the installation, Nexans is intending to deploy its newly-introduced cable-laying vessel Nexans Aurora, which has the capacity to operate in a water depth of over 2,000 m and can support a 10,000-tonne cable payload.

Furthermore, the French company has added that more projects in the region are expected to be announced as it seeks to play a much significant role in enhancing the grid infrastructure across the Mediterranean region. After the commencement of its operations, the Tyrrhenian Link will make an electricity corridor between Sicily, Sardinia, and Campania enabling the first loop to be set up between the two islands and the Italian mainland.
